Like Spring Water - Hungarian State Folk Ensemble (1951)

Founded in 1951, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble developed its artistic direction by drawing on two key models. They sought a balance between ethnographic authenticity and theatrical expression, making tradition not just an aesthetic source but also a framework for dialogue between past and present.

The ensemble consisted of three artistic units: the dance troupe, the choir and the music band. The band was led by László Gulyás; its sound was modelled on the traditional gypsy bands but adapted to the needs of stage performance. The choir was directed by Imre Csenki.

Choreographer and artistic director Miklós Rábai shaped the ensemble's artistic image. His works featured original folk dances in various stage forms: as independent pieces, regional dance suites, or compositions performed in folk costumes.

The performances became complete with the unity of dance, music, and singing. The processing of ballads gave the productions dramatic power, while contemporary and relevant topics demonstrated that tradition was not only about the past: it can also answer questions of the present.

Craft_ME is being introduced through Folk_ME

Craft_ME (Craft Media & Education) is an innovative digital platform focused on teaching and preserving folk crafts. Its primary goal is to make the entire process of traditional craft techniques and trades—from the initial preparation of materials to the completion of the finished object—visually accessible to a wide range of people interested in the profession, using digital tools.

Busós at the airport

We are in the middle of the carnival season, and the Busójárás festival in Mohács is fast approaching, which will fill the city in southern Hungary with life for six days at the end of February. This folk custom, which marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, will appear not only in Mohács this year, but also at the capital's airport.

Just gone festivalling

The festival season is in full swing, and our team is also joining the summer vacationers: the institution will be closed between July 28 and August 18, 2025.
