Bartók 1914 tavaszán, a nagy háború kitörése előtt néhány héttel gyűjtött a székelyföldi Nyárád-mente számos falujában. Ebben a gyűjtésben az énekes dalok mellett bőségesen találhatók hangszeres dallamok is, számos furulyás és hegedűs előadásában. A sokszor nehezen kivehető, zajos fonográffelvételek értelmezése csak az elmúlt évszázadot túlélt, ma is élő helyi zenei hagyomány ismeretében volt lehetséges. Ennek eredményeként született ez a hangverseny.
