Szászcsávás is situated along the Kis-Küküllő, in a valley to the left from the tributary’s middle section. The first written record of the village dates back to 1301. The origins of the polyphonic singing tradition of Szászcsávás can be traced back to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It was then that cantor teacher József Belle Sr. began to teach the students of the school the medieval polyphonic singing style for church hymns, which has since then become a folk staple and is an exceptional tradition in the Hungarian-speaking world. The Csávás choir was first recorded to have been performed at a church inauguration on 12 February 1837. Choir singing is a living tradition, and nowadays, there are two choirs: a male choir and a mixed choir. Szászcsávás is located in one of the best wine regions in Transylvania, and almost without exception, the villagers are all also winemakers.
