Béla Halmos (1946-2013), one of the founding fathers of the 50-year-old dance house movement, was a musician, folklore collector, teacher and organizer, and one of the leaders of the urban revival movement. In the midst of his varied activities, he carefully documented his activities and the folklore events he considered important from the very beginning. With this exhibition, the Hungarian Heritage House pays tribute to the wide-ranging oeuvre of this musician-performer, academic researcher, and cultural organizer. In his words: “Regarding the Hungarian folk music and dance, I would refrain from any predictions. Not only the life of the Hungarian people, but that of the whole world has changed to such an extent that one can only hope for a normal, humane future. So, for example, I hope that as long as there will be people on Earth, there will be some kind of ‘folk music and dance’. How the accumulated knowledge and traditions as a whole shall be passed on to the next generations is still an almost complete mystery, but seeing the success of the dance house movement, which has been operating for more than 30 (50) years, both at home and abroad, we have reason not to lose our hopes!"
